Food for Self Reliance

This is a list of vegetables and fruits that together form the basis of a survival diet, if no food imports could come in. These foods are good to store, keep for months, are nutrient dense, can be grown easily and are well adapted to Alberta, Canada and other North American locations.
Right now we will just list these foods for self-reliance (see Blog post on each one):
GARLIC
CARROTS
CABBAGE
SWISS CHARD
SPINACH
DRY ONIONS
DRY BEANS
POTATO
APPLES
SASKATOONS
DRIED CHERRIES
PLUMS

There are more great foods that meet our key criterion. These are the ones that we use the most and can source out as organic and/or carbon capture from Alberta. California, Mexico and other import sources, may not always be around.
Most of the vegetables and fruits eaten in Alberta could be grown here whereas now it is over 90% imports (see 2016 census). Most food production in Alberta is directed towards exports.

Growing your own food, focusing on vegetables and fruits/berries sounds wonderful. For us seniors, it is much better to let the young growers do the hard work of providing key foods to urban consumers. Pay them well to grow the vegetables and fruits needed for food self-reliance, while also capturing carbon to mitigate the climate-crisis. Consumers need to understand that food self-reliance depends on young ranchers and farmers making a good living off the land.
